GEMS unveils an AI-led school model, and haze shuts schools across Kuala Lumpur.

GEMS to pilot AI-led 'GR8 School' model at a UAE campus from January 2027

GEMS Education will soft-launch GR8 School in January 2027 as a school within an existing GEMS campus in the UAE. Pupils work through core content at their own pace with adaptive AI, with roughly 90 minutes to two hours a day of teacher-led learning and teachers recast as 'human mentors'. Indicative fees run from about US$8,000-10,000 for affordable schools to US$20,000-40,000 for premium ones.

Haze closes schools in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor and Putrajaya

Malaysia's education minister ordered schools in Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Selangor, Johor, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan and Pahang's Rompin district to close on 9 October and move to home-based learning as the haze worsened. Under new ministry rules, schools close where the air pollutant index tops 180, or stays above 150 for three days from 12 October. The order covers Education Ministry institutions; reports did not say how private international schools are responding.
